Project Background Emersion DESIGN LLC in Cincinnati, Ohio has become the first Architecture and Engineering firm in the world to operate out of a LEED Platinum office space. They are the fourth architecture firm to have their offices Platinum Certified. The other architecture firms are good company: Cook + Fox Architects in New York City, Perkins + Will in Seattle and Boora Architects in Portland.
Strategies and Results A calculated 92% of the office space is day-lit, and light sensors control the use of supplemental fluorescent lighting, combining to use over a third less electricity than standard offices. The office is located within walking distance of ten basic community services, like parks, churches, schools, as well as within walking distance of two bus routes. The office used a third less water than required by code.
During construction of the office space, 41% of the building shell was reused, as well as 94% of the walls, ceilings, and finishes on the interior. Out of 2,460 pounds of debris, only 18 pounds ended up in a landfill.
69% of the construction material is salvaged. 67% of office furniture was acquired second-hand, and 31% of construction materials are made of recycled material. All of the wood prosucts in the office are FSC certified and sustainably harvested, and all of the paints, sealants, adhesives, carpets, and wood/fiberboard products are certified not to harm indoor air quality.
"Given the extraordinary importance of climate protection and the central role of the building industry in that effort, emersion DESIGN demonstrates their leadership through their LEED (Platinum) certification of their office space." -Rick Fedrizzi, President, USGBC
