Melink Corporations 30,000 square-foot headquarters is located just east of Cincinnati, Ohio. Steve Melink, the President, decided to consolidate the companys three Cincinnati locations into one headquarters in early 2004. The goals were improve operational efficiencies and provide room for future growth. Another goal was added to the list after Mr. Melink attended a green building conference in July 2004. -I was inspired by the passion and commitment of owners, architects, engineers, manufacturers, and consultants to create a sustainable building industry.- he says.
Strategies and Results The buildings designers employ a two story structure to minimize land use. Low profile workstations allow daylight to flow through the space. Window blinds help direct natural light into the space by acting as light shelves. Electric lighting is zoned and only used to supplement natural light. Occupancy sensors turn lights off when the spaces are empty.
MELINK CORPORATION Earns the ENERGY STAR for Superior Energy Efficiency
(October 2009, MILFORD, OH) Melink Corporation has earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) prestigious Energy Star, a national symbol for superior energy efficiency and environmental protection. This signifies that the building's energy performance rates in the top 25 percent of facilities nationwide.
This achievement is another demonstration of Melink's commitment to environmental stewardship while also lowering energy costs. In 2005, Melink built the first LEED Gold Certified NC (New Construction) office building in Ohio. Just recently the company applied for LEED Platinum Certification EB (Existing Building). Once awarded, Melink will be the first existing building in Ohio to hold the LEED Platinum Certification EB.
EPA's national energy performance rating system provides a 1-100 scale that helps organizations assess how efficiently their buildings use energy relative to similar buildings nationwide. A building that scores a rating of 75 or higher is eligible for the Energy Star. Melink received a near-perfect score of 97!
Commercial buildings that earn the Energy Star use an average of 35 percent less energy than typical buildings and also release 35 percent less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Melink improved its energy performance by managing energy strategically across the entire organization and by making cost-effective improvements to its building.
"Improving the energy efficiency of our nation's buildings is critical to preserving our environment and our natural resources, " said Kathleen Hogan, director of EPA's Climate Protection Partnerships Division. "From office buildings to hotels, supermarkets to schools, the Energy Star distinguishes those organizations who are taking environmental responsibility into their own hands."
Energy Star was introduced by EPA in 1992 as a voluntary, market-based partnership to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency. Today, the Energy Star label can be found on more than 60 different kinds of products, new homes, and commercial and industrial buildings. Products and buildings that have earned the ENERGY STAR designation prevent greenhouse gas emissions by meeting strict energy-efficiency specifications set by the government. Last year alone, Americans, with the help of Energy Star, saved about $19 billion on their energy bills while reducing the greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those of 29 million vehicles.
